Dormancy for Plumerias' First Year

Hello,

I am new to plumerias and new to this forum as well. I have three plumeria cuttings rooted this year and they still have some green leaves on. Somebody told me, don't let the plumerias go dormancy the first year. Is this true?

I live in Tri-valley in North California, which is zone 9. We get lots of heat in summer, but also get frost in winter. I really want to plant them outdoor on the ground. If I try to protect them from frost, like putting the blankets on them when it frosts, will plumerias survive and bloom well next year?

I wouldn't bet on it. Keep them potted and bring in
When weather drops to 40 or below. I
Am also in z9(Texas ) hv had them in ground
But they gradually decline over time

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'll will keep them all in the pots. Just bought a green house for all my tropical plants. They will have a nice and warm winter this year. Well not a warm, but a frost free winter.

I agree.. We have cold winters even for Plumerias in the ground!! They wouldn't make it... IMO

You could always plunge your containers and then brings them inside for the winter.

I am in Virginia beach and I have to bring in everyone.. Argh, but, it is worth it!!!

I saw one of your plumeria pics. Oh man. That's a lot work.

I will try to bring more cuttings from Hawaii next year. 10 will be my maximum though. I can not handle so many like yours.

If they were rooted after January I keep them actively growing that winter. Then after the next summer, I allow them to go dormant.
