In my opinion, the whole point of a potager IS to be small. A small garden is more intimate, can be enclosed, and is easier to maintain to the standards of an ornamental garden. Thanks for the pictures llass. It's a lovely example.

Now I find out! I knew my garden was getting too big...that's why I've been calling it a kitchen garden, but it's also a butterfly garden, fruit garden, miniature vegetables garden, potager, hopscotch, tic tac toe...see what I mean??? (LOL)

I'm not sure if "the whole point of a potager IS to be small." At Versailles they certainly aren't small. A great American version on a grand scale would be the Walled Garden at the Biltmore Estate. After all, it is from these monumental gardens that the modern ones derive their inspiration. I think one could design a beautiful potager of any size.
