Plant spacing in raised beds

It seems that all the seed companies assume that everyone is a row cropper. The directions always say something like "plant seeds four inches apart in rows that are one foot apart". Yet, I want to plant my seeds in blocks in my 4'x8' beds. So, how do you decide how to space your plants? I am inclined to plant every seed 4 inches apart, but that would make 9 (bean) plants per square foot. Will that work?

Actually, you have exactly the right idea! You got the spacing perfect. Check out the square-foot-garden forum for more info, but here's a link to their spacing guidelines.
