Our new potager (still bare) has wire fencing held up by tall 5" diam. cedar poles. The north side poles are really, really tall (8 ft.) for future climbing roses. The south side poles are currently 5 ft. high because the poles, set into the ground to a 3 ft. depth, stick up that much. We could saw them down to a 3 ft. height which would match the wire fence on that side.

But the 5-footers (I'm advised by you fellow potagerists to leave them that high as an anti-deer device) need visual softening. What do you suggest: small shrubs planted outside the potager in front of the posts? I don't want to block the sunlight to the potager veggies. NOT hanging flowerpots because we're only there on weekends so there's no way to keep them watered. Or should I nail interesting decor to them? If I don't do something soon, the neighbors may start calling our yard the Totem Pole Farm! Help!
