Plant selection help

Hi all

I have a tiny back yard which I'm developing into a "cottage/rose" garden with some peppers and such mixed in with the plants - this takes up most of my yard [17 x 17.5 ft] with the patio and sidewalk. I have a small area that has a 3 ft raised bed and another 3 ft x 2 ft "block" of space to plant. I would like to use this area for a "salad garden". Can you recommend varieties of cucumbers and tomatoes that would fit into the 3 ft raised bed? I would like to include 1 or 2 each of a cucumber and tomato - and some violas or nasturtians inthe raised part with some basil, swiss chard & baby lettuce surrounding the raised bed [about 6 inches of growin space width wise] Help please

Fern

I would go to the square foot gardening forum or just google "square foot gardening" to get proper spacing for the vegetables and flowers that you want to grow. It is an intensive technique that works well. The cucumbers and tomatoes can grow vertically and you can grow the rest in front of them. Any variety will work. It's a matter of choice. Another thought is to grow the tomatoe plant in a large pot and save space for more of the other vegetables. You can also tuck in some basil with the tomatoe. Good luck! SSG

Ditto, plus look into the container gardening group here for lots of good ideas. Enjoy.
