| Hello all...I'm new to the Potager idea and am having a wonderful time lurking in all the threads and seeing the pics of all the great gardens. I have a large area (30x60ft) that was formerly pasture that I want to turn into a potager. This summer is going to just be prep work - getting the soil amended and the beds laid out, and maybe some foundation perennials in.
I do know that I want to try to have more rounded/curved beds. So that sort of eliminates using timbers as edging. I would love to build beds edged in dry-stacked slate type stone, but for a garden that large there is no way I could afford it all at once. Plus I want to try out my design ideas before making them permanent.
So...I had this brainstorm. What about taking some kind of 2" wire mesh, about 10-15" wide and curving it to make an inverted 'U' shape. Sort of like row covers but smaller. Then filling under the mesh with good soil and planting edging plants (thyme, alyssum) in it to create a living border around the beds? Over time, as I could afford it I would replace the mesh with stone, but the small plant border would still look good next to areas built up with stone I think.
Has anyone tried this before, or have thoughts on whether it would work? |
