Underplanting for columnar apples

This spring I planted 3 bare root columnar apple trees in my strawberry bed. The trees are about 2' high now, but should grow up to 8' and only 2-3' wide. I'm pretty excited to see how they do.

I'm rethinking the strawberries underneath though. The berries are a pain to pick. It's a 9' x 3' border bed and I find that I still need to get into the bed to get the berries at the back.

So what do you think? I was thinking non-running alpines in the front and something else in back. But what? Or I'd love to hear your ideas.
