update and ?

| Ok...we finally got the wall up and are ready to start the raised beds. We will be doing 4)3'x8'beds on the one side (longer right side of pic) and I am still figuring out the other side (front left in the pic). Probably artichokes and a tee-pee for the kids with vining plants. It has taken forever, but the 100 degree days kept us inside.
Looking out to the street:
Anyhow, my question:
I want to do blackberries in front of the wall (closest to the street), but I would like to complement them with another perennial plant. Oh, it is southern exposure (full, hot sun), clay soil and the area is about 5'x11' each side of the walkway. Any suggestions?
Area in front for blackberries:
Here is another view of the front. We left about 3' along the side of the wall, between our yard and our neighbors, for a row of grapes.

That is really beautiful! You guys did a great job on that wall. I would love to have that privacy! WOW!! I hope others will check in soon, and help you with your question. This forum has been really slow. Haziemoon |

Wow, I'm kinda surprized that a newer development will allow you to build fences, plant veges and fruits etc.! If you are in CA., have you seen what blackberries will do to a yard????? They swallow small houses! I have seen an acre taken over by blackberries! My summer home at the Russian River has them, and I can't get rid of them! I love BBs, but, unless you have some that don't spread and take over everything, re-think them.JMHO Nancy |

Oh, that is exactly what I want in the future, surrounding my veggie garden!! I love the stucco wall and how nicely it "goes" with your home. GGG |

| Thanks for the compliments. :) We have been working really hard; I'll have to update some pics. As for blackberries, yes, I know they "thrive" in CA. That is why they are going in front of the concrete wall (with a concrete footing) and bordered by the sidewalk. I also know that proper pruning of the canes will keep them in place. There is a beautiful berry farm in Camino, CA (aka, Apple Hill) that has beautiful rows of neatly contained raspberries and blackberries. They taste soooo good right of the vine. My kids love it. :) |
