Trees in raised beds?

Posted by trsinc 8 tx (My Page) on

I have a retaining wall made of really heavy limestone blocks. Each one is about 2 feet long and 10 inches high. Some areas are two blocks high and some are 3. From the wall to the hill behind it is 2 feet.

I'd like to plant 2 small trees. One Crepe Myrtle and one Anacaho (Texas Orchid). Do you think the roots would eventually dislodge the blocks?

Anyone have trees in their raised beds for at least 10 years to compare?

You might post this on the tree forum, where they have lots of experience with tree root behavior, etc. ( I don't have any experience with raised beds and trees. )

I have a crape myrtle in a raised bed between my house and the sidewalk. It is made of railroad ties that are bolted together. The crape myrtle has been there for 13 years and it has never been a problem.

I have some columnar apple trees in a raised bed made of cinderblock on one side, and the gravel driveway on the other. They are only 3 year old babies, but so far no trouble. However, they can spread their roots to the driveway in their search for water and food, so they may be less likely to push against the blocks. We shall see.
