Not quite sure why they're tapered perhaps it's easier to pop the plants out of them. I made a mistake in purchasing some decorative planters that had a big round bottom and more narrow top. Don't plant anything that you ever want to transplant into something that shape. My poor plants survived but they were very unhappy with the abuse they went through to get out of those pots!
