Meadow vs Lawn

Live in northern Illinois. Late last summer I moved into a house on a half acre of land. We are the last house before a large meadow. The former owner's lawn is very thick and he kept it mowed right over to the meadow line. There is no fence. I would like to let the meadow grow over into my yard about 10 feet to lessen the amount of mowing. I am assuming I can just let the lawn grass grow up and the meadow will slowly seed and encroach. Am I right? Or, will it look bad? I also would like to plant wildflowers in the area. Do I need to dig up the lawn, or can I just plant native plants right in the lawn to grow up with lawn. Will the lawn be too dominant and choke the meadow growth? I had hate to tear up such a huge chunk of my lawn to do this. It is a very healthy, thick lawn. I do not know what type of grass it is, but I have never seen a lawn so thick. Help!
