mowing time

Hello,

We have an old hayfield (approx 1/2 acre) that we are leaving to grow as meadow. It contains lots of milkweed, asters, goldenrod and numerous grasses. I have heard that spring mowing is better for overwintering butterflies. Is it OK to mow just as soon as the snow has melted and the ground is firm enough? I'm just concerned because I know that butterflies need 15 degrees celcius to fly. I adore butterflies and want to do what is best for them. Any experienced advice out there? Thanks is advance.
