| Perhaps you should mention that 10 out of 10 deer prefer azaleas to native grasses and prairie flowers. You could start by cutting the weeds, smothering them with paper or cardboard and covering the area with layers of organic material, compost, and mulch so that it is 3-6 inches deep. It will surely look better just with that. This method is often called lasagna gardening because of the use of layers, but whatever you call it, it will kill all or most of the weeds and improve the soil at the same time. You can then wait to learn more about what species are appropriate to plant, whether you want to start with plugs or seeds, and other useful info. You can also plant right into the garden by digging and amending individual holes. Make sure the weeds can't come through the holes. I have a similar project and have just started planting winter sowed plants into my 'meadow'. Depending on how large your area is, will probably determine how you go about it. It might be nice to include some native shubs that provide berries for a mixed border and more of a screen with your neighbor. There are some great plants that like wet spots, and others that will do great in full sun with less water. If you choose and plant wisely, it can be very beautiful! Good luck! |
