Do you know a bout Wild Ones Native Landscapers? They have a small grant program (Seeds for Education) that is especially intended to encourage school-based projects that use native plants.
Believe me you aren't alone. I am on my 10th year of growing and advocating for prairies and native plants, it never get's old for me. There is nothing like your first prairie! When I started out it was a new concept in my local area to think about planting for butterflies, wildlife and to use native plants or replicate habitats, but it catches on, and it only takes one caring person like yourself to get the ball rolling. The prairies, of course, speak for themselves.
Across the lake, here in Ohio, we (the Ohio Prairie Association) are diligently working on a new Ohio Schoolyard Prairie Program. Peoria, Illinois has a remarkable program where schools plant prairies, kids collect seeds in the fall, start growing them in winter, and then plant them in spring. Lots of science and humanities curriculum materials, with a lots of information text for printout. We are working closely with the Peoria people and will adapt their good stuff to the Ohio situation. We hope to make major annoucements at the Ohio Prairie Conference this year at Marion, Oh, first weekend in August. Lots of prairie things happening in the Buckeye State (which like the other well-known prairie states, had prairies too, just like Ontario to the north).
