 o
what is this?

Unfortunately, I don't have my camera here, but I will do my best to describe this flower (?) that I found in a meadow near my home. It is completely wild and It is about 18 inches tall and looks like a dandelion in the white puff stage, but it is the size of a tennis ball and is light brown. The closed versions of it look like dandelions at night, but shaped more like a genie bottle.
It is really cool looking, but I can't find it on the web.
Thanks for your help.

Joanne

I think ahughes is referring to 'yellow goats beard' or yellow salsify, Tragopogon dubius (and related species). These are all non-native (I think) and are considered invasive in some areas.

I mention this because many in this forum are familiar with the 'white goatsbeard', Aruncus dioicus, a native that looks nothing like a dandelion, and will not bloom for another month or so...

Here is a link that might be useful: yellow salsify

It's an annoying thing if it's yellow salsify. I have seen them all my life in fields etc. When they started coming up in my yard I wasn't happy- they seem to be bug magnets and they are a pain to pull! Please try to avoid the darn thing-- I walk around ripping off flower heads when I'm out camping etc.

I get the yellow Salsify and find them very easy to pull around here...if you pull from the base they come straight out with a narrow taproot. I just pulled about 20 or so plants yesterday. The entire field across from me is filled with these, bachelors button, wild rose, Equisetum and curly dock. The Salsify will bloom and send seed all over the place and into my yard.

What color trim did you use? I'm new to this forum and have not quite got the hang of it. Can you email me at csteeghs@comcast.net with the trim color?
Thanks so much
