If you can find young plants early on, growing in shallow dirt, it might be possible. Gather as much soil with them as you can. Otherwise, the roots of mature plants are DEEP. Also, try collecting seeds in the Fall.

Here it is a weed along country roads and in fields and orchards, but stopping to dig along the highway might be considered a no-no. Just wondering.

Also it's a non-native if that matters.

I bought seeds from Wildseed Farms & may have some seeds that I harvested from the plants I grew this year. Do you have any natives or Butterfly host plants you would like to trade?
I have dug up a few native milkweed plants that have very deep tap roots by using a sharp shooter shovel. Some made it & others didn't. I found them by rural roads or deserted fields. I think you could get in trouble digging by a highway.
