This is the one someone ID as Grey-headed Coneflower, but thats obviously not it. It's about 3' tall and looks like some type of Coreopsis:

You already said what I was thinking ... "some kind of coreopsis"..

its the leaves that have us baffled, their soft and fluffy, like a kittens ear. and because in all my books, i cannot find a kitten's ear coreopsis (which there obviously needs to be)

either u have a new species, which hereon we shall call it Coreopsis vera.

or its a furry horticultural type of lanceleaf.

i pick the former but im a splitter and not a clumper

Here is a link that might be useful: lanceleaf

Thanks...I figure Coreopsis but which species? Very strange LOL!
Froggy, no those leaves are not soft and fluffy like Mullien or Lambsears, etc. The leaves have semi stiff short hairs; more crowded on the margins and sparser on the leaf surface, the undersides have very few. They may look downy because the leaves are rather grey'ish-green looking in color.

I wonder if they are Coreopsis grandiflora (Large flowered Tickseed)?

its not grandiflora. grandiflora has a big flora but a thin, rather meek leaf. im pretty sure its lanceolata.
