150 acres of native growth?

My husband and I have 150 acres of ground and are exploring the possibility of returning it to as close to it's original state as possible. The woods seem dominated by oaks, gum, hickory, cedar and pine. The fields are planted in fescue for haying. This will be the last year it will be harvested. When we bought the place 20 years or so ago, the fields were dominated by a flower (weed) called Spanish needle. A spectacle we don't care to see again. We have an offer from a soy bean/corn farmer to grow his crops on our land. He would use Roundup to kill everything first and then plant his crops. We are thinking it would be a good idea to let him spend his money on that for about two years and then plant all tillable acres in native grasses and flowers. We have no information on how to go about all this though, and any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

p.s. inner woodland plantings would be cool too! Any thoughts? |

| planting a field in soybeans one or two years prior to tilling wildflowers and natives is common practice and a good start. i would reccomend that you contact your local NRCS office. i have found them to be a great resource (at least in our area) for helping rural property owners with information and direction on restoring natural areas. and the information that NRCS provides will be specific for your area. |
