Problem Area in my prairie

chris_7oaks

I planted 1/3 acre in native mesic prairie in spring '08, it's doing very well now in its 3rd year. Part of this area is my septic mound, and it seemed that site prep of that area was not adequate as it became too weedy and did not progress nearly as well as the rest of the planting. I thought there was too much worth saving to just start over, so I dormant seeded into that area last fall with Prairie Nursery's Bird & Butterfly Mix. It is doing a little better this year, I've been surgically removing weeds, but I am at the point now where I think it should be either mowed, or maybe burned in the fall? My goal is to promote the forbs and eliminate the weeds - primarily canadian thistle, burdock, red cover & queen anne's lace. Any advice on what the best approach might be is greatly appreciated...Thank You!
