Field Photo - What do you see?

Posted by claydirt 5 (My Page) on

I would like some help with plant identifications. I was driving on I74 west between Cincinnati and Indianapolis and took this picture. The variety of plants really surprised me. If you just list names, I'll Google and figure out what is what.

What I think I see (but this is just a small fractions of the plants in this picture)...

Butterflyweed --- Asclepias tuberosa
Rattlesnake Master --- Eryngium yuccifolium
Wild Bergamont --- Monarda fistulosa
Prairie Dock --- Silphium terebinthinaceum

So what are the "black-eyed susan" type flowers? Is that Silphium of some sort growing in the lower left? Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Native Wildflowers

Hopefully this post will end up in the Meadows & Prairies Forum... It's been a long time since I posted.

The yellow one is a cone flower'Echinacea paradoxa' we have them here in SD too, all over the place.

In addition to the ones you identified I see Ratibida pinnata, Echinacea purpurea, Elymus virginicus (or maybe E. canadensis), and possibly Helianthus mollis. There is a thistle but can't tell which one. Also see some asters and goldenrods.

Thank you Ament and Lycopus. This is great information. I will look these plants up to learn a little more about them. I didn't even remember seeing the thistle, but there it is!

I think the thistle is a Field Thistle "Cirsium discolor" I think that names them all. At least all that we can recognize from this image anyway. :)
