Prairie/Meadow Boundary

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to maintain a boundary or border on the edges of a prairie/meadow? Do people plant right up to the edge of neighboring woods or other abutting property or do most people try to mow a border to keep weeds, sumacs, etc. from encroaching? I am starting an area that will be about 1/2 acre in size.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I have found that using Roundup (about a foot wide dead strip) gives a nice looking definition between lawn and the priarie and makes it easy to mow around it.. It does not, however, provide a safe fire break distance between trees and prairie. It also keeps the lawn from spreading into the planting. (Mostly)
