Coreopsis....which one?

Good morning :)

I have had the Coreopsis tinctoria blooming for sometime now, but during the last couple of days I spotted a few plants that are a Coreopsis but not sure which one. This one has the same leaf shape but only they are not as wispy and are just a tad wider, lighter green and have a rough texture. Right now each has only one single bud...unlike the brown botton-like buds of tinctoria, these buds are pale'ish and cone-shaped yet small.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Vera

RE: Coreopsis....new changes

Ok...now it's not looking like a Coreopsis at all, except leaves resemble those of Dwarf Prairie Coreopsis. There is a single flowering stem between 4-6" above the leaves, a light cone shaped center and now added are 4 drooping yellow petals...I have a feeling the flower will get bigger and cone will darken as it matures.

Is this what is known as a Yellow Coneflower?

Thanks

Vera

Alrighty...I think I got it! Prairie Coneflower, Ratibida columnifera. Sure didn't think I'd see any blooms from a first year perennial :)

Glad you solved your own mystery, Vera! LOL I am growing Mexican Hats (same species but has red & yellow on the petals). They grew and bloomed from seed just this summer. I LOVE them. :o)

Tee hee :))
I always seem to do that...just after I post I turn around and find what I'm asking about! I figure I better post that I found it so nobody else waists there time trying to help :)

I like those Mexican hats too :)
That's just like the Dwarf Plains Coreopsis I sowed from one single packet from Lonnie's Bulk Seeds...I got 3 different colors out of them: yellow/maroon center ones, plain yellow ones and then solid maroon ones! They were supposed to be dwarf's but I don't think 3 feet qualifies! I just love them all :)

My plains coreopsis plants are "spilling" over the little white fencing around my garden and they look so beautiful. Like a cascade. I am still amazed at how well these reseed themselves. Next year it'll probably be in every inch of my garden *yikes!*

I'm curious to know what the Mexican hats' seeds will look like. Several of the flowers are done now, have dropped their petals. Will the seeds be visible?

I have been asked to collect some of my 'Sweet Dreams' seed for an exchange. I am curious to know how they'll do from seed too.
