Solarizing to kill a trumpet vine?

I just read about solarizing in the recent MARTHA STEWART LIVING magazine about solarizing to kill off invasive weeds prior to planting a garden. Has anyone tried this to kill off a trumpet vine (my husband warned me not to plant this next to the house and I didn't listen...)? If so, did it work? To get rid of this vine I'm willing to sacrifice all the other plants in the bed except for some waxleaf ligustrums (that I transported from North Carolina and which have thrived despite being outside their comfort zone). They are planted at the very back of the bed next to the house. HELP!

Sounds like an interesting experiment. I remember watching a Victory Garden episode on this subject, solarizing will kill off diseases lurking in the soil too. You can also keep cutting the sprouts and then paint the stumps with Round Up concentrate. Don’t dilute it. Works great on the evil Buckthorn up here. Check out this link on solarizing.

my guess is that it would take years, not months

quick story...
i was at my neighbors house that had most likely the very same plant that was cloning from three houses down, springing up every now and again into a large growth. this took place over 50 years but imagine the amount of underground 'stuff' that a plant like that has. this plant was starting to actually move to MY garden but wasnt expecting the likes of me. i convinced all the neighbors that this was infact the same plant and that it running amuck. it went into the 2nd year of cutting stems and painting roundup on the exposed stem before if finally met its maker.

not sure a bit of hot plastic is gonna do it but sure seems fun to make em sweat a bit.

froggy
