yellow flower ID

I just posted this question on the woodlands forum and then thought maybe this one might be a better fit. I found these pretty yellow flowers growing in an area where there is some runoff from a hill so the area should be considered damp. This area is about 20 feet from a creek. The plants are a couple feet tall. I think it's a wildflower, not sure, since a house used to be at this site several years ago before it burned down. The house was situated in a wooded rural area in eastern Kansas.
