Small area to plant - When?

We have a small area (40x40, more or less) in front of the driveway at the new house that was originally just going to be lawn. But a friend has given us a bag of prairie seed that he got several years ago from the state (so we know it's the good stuff), and I got some KS wildflower seeds last week when we were at the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in Council Grove. So goodbye lawn, hello grasses and flowers. The area was construction junk and weeds, and the excavator dug it up and spread (our own personal) topsoil there last week. Should I plant it now, or wait till, say, November?

I'd wait until late November, early December.

Yeah I'd wait and time it just before the snows...if you try any sooner the birds, field mice and da da da, will think you spread out a buffet! Good luck with your project :) Vera

for a fall seeding, give the seeds either 6 weeks of 40+ nights or wait til dormant seeding, not sure when ur 'dormant' time is, but if ur violets arnt growing, its dormant in ur area.

Here in north-central OK, my black-eyed Susan, indian-blanket, & other annuals germinate after the first rains of September (along with a gazillion annual weed seedlings). So I plant annuals in September, & let them get established before cold weather in December. But with warm-season native grasses, it's recommended to plant seed in March or even April.
