Does anyone know how I can control the spread of a stand of switchgrass that I planted about 5 years ago? I know it has a huge underground root system as do many prairie plants, but it is just becoming such a huge clump and not looking so good and crowding out neighboring plants.- Any suggestions?

RE: switchgrass

Dig out the root ball, I don't think you have to worry about the root hairs, they won't grow back. To make quick work of it, you can carve out portions of the root ball with a 12" blade Sawzall. Some people use this trick to carve out the dead centers of their grasses to rejuvenate their plant.
