Trumpet vine would be good for a wooden fence or other strong fence. The vine gets quite heavy with age, so I wouldn't attach it to anything that is whimpy. Its flowers stay in bloom for a long time and it attracts hummingbirds like magnets. There is more than one vine called trumpet vine, I am talking about the native US species here. Although it is often said to spread, I've never had any issue with it doing so. I had some on a fence for years and mowing around the general area it grows it contained it for me. I'm not sure I'd grow it in a barrel though, I can only imagine this thing has a monsterous root system. I think if you just add some compost to the area it's planted it the vine should be fine. I've grown them from cuttings, but I know they can be started from seed also. The seeds should be ripening soon actually. Virginia Creeper is another vine you might consider. I've actually grown it in a large container before and it did pretty well. I don't have sandy soil, so I couldn't comment on which vines are suited for your soil type.
