WI native thistle?

We just found a large unfamiliar thistle rosette: bright shiny green, visible points on deeply cut leaves but not at all prickly; the "leaflets" have a wide connection to the center vein, occasionally overlapping neighbors. At this stage the plant is NOT thorny at all. We may have to wait until next year when it should bloom for identification as most ID's seem to be on the flower stem and blossom. I'll try for a picture next time I'm there.

RE: WI native thistle?

Identifying from a rosette is nearly impossible. Many of the lettuces, hawkweeds and the dandelion relatives also have divided leaves with points and a few prickles on their rosettes. You'll need a good field guide and a blossoming plant for firm identification.

Most of the thistles found growing in fields are not native. Below is a link to many pictures of thistles.
