I posted on the Plant Clinic too...
Thought I'd better ask you all too for some help. Very strange that this only has happened to one cut-back clump even thou they were all neighbors up until moving all but this one. All cut-back stems on the clump formed a yellow latex-like growth or ooze at the site of cuts which is 'hardened' now. I would say this formed about 2 weeks following the cuts (noticed yesterday). I cut all back about 1 month ago due to high-wind breakage and moved them all to more sheltered locations, but left this one for an experiment next year.
Any guesses?
Thanks,

Froggy, I am a Hort student and I was gathering specimens of abiotic and biotic plant disease and pressing them in a presser, etc. thru summer break and fall for my fall quarter independant "Special Problems" class... Anyhoo I finally took it in to my instructor, but made the mistake of putting it into a plastic baggie and by the time my 1st class was out it well...melted! HAHAHAHA And the story goes I came home and cut off more and spent the next day using all of my instuctors reference materials, the internet, etc and came to the conclusion that what I had was some type of slime mold, probably Fuligo septica, taking the opportunity to break down/decay the stalk stumps(organic matter).
