Need prairie grass suggestions

| I am in the process of converting a portion of my backyard into a meadow/prairie. The area is still a lawn although I did not cut it all summer. I have planted many native wildflower plants already, just planted them into the long grass of the lawn, and I would like to get some clumping grasses to fill in between the flowers. I don't want any grasses that get taller than a foot or foot and a half, are there any hardy clumping grasses that you can suggest I use. I would like to see the prairie grasses choke out the lawn grass and weeds eventually. Thanks. John |

| How sunny is your yard? How sandy is the soil? If it is sunny and sandy, you could plant little bluestem, which would get 2-3 feet tall. Any prairie plant will probably get tall on the nutrient enriched loamy soils of the typical yard. Many years of prescribed fire could, theoretically burn off much of those nutrients. Prairies will be overtaken by weeds and common grasses unless they are given a competitive edge - drought, wildfire, or large herds of bison. Or you can do a lot of weeding to give the prairie wildflowers and grasses a competitive edge. That is what I do. I'm afraid there is no magic bullet. Michigan is too wet for prairies to occur "naturally" except on the sandiest of soils in the sunniest yards. |

Please tell about the weather conditions going on now a days If it is hot i suggest you to grow Bermuda grass, or St. Augustine grass If it's chilly you better grow Fescues or Bluegrass but that will get yellow in the warm winter Before sowing seeds remember visiting the site http://www.viraleruption.com/growing-grass-seeds.html It will help you a lot... |
