Growing plants will not make you rich unless you have a love for plants and an acute mind for finances. I've been in the nursery business since 1974, working retail for others and on my own since 1990. My love of plants is over the top and I get by because of this. I have a little dinky house on a pretty hill. I will be working till the day I die because I wasn't smart enough to put more money into IRA's.

When I was interviewing for a job in interior landscaping, the boss told me, "You ain't never gonna get rich in this business, but we have a lot of fun, most days." Truer words were never spoken. I have both a love of plants and a good mind for finances, and I'm starting my own business now. I don't expect to get rich, but I'm hoping to make a little more working for myself, plus the advantage of a shorter commute and doing things MY WAY!

I used to be a purchasing assistant - which is a fancy way of saying a secretary. No, I haven't gotten rich but I've at least slighly exceeded what I used to make in that position - plus I only have to work 8.5 months versus a full 12 months to make the same amount of money. And, to echo Sheila I do it MY WAY!! - LOL I'll probably live longer too - it's good, physical work. I've lost weight and don't feel like I'm going to have a heart attack everyday from the stress of having psychotic bosses.

I've lost weight too, but unfortunely the stress is actually worse for me. I used to get mad when my coworkers were being idiots but I could let it go at night. Now I lay awake at night wondering if the boss (that is, ME!) is an idiot or a genius, and going over proposal calculations in my head and wondering if I'm going to make enough money and if I know what the heck I'm doing. In the light of day, I KNOW I can do this, but at night it all looks scarier.

watergal, it will get easier after you've had your business for a year - you'll stop staying awake at night counting figures instead of sheep.

Even though I have good strong high tunnel double inflated hoophouses, it took 2 years before I could actually sleep when the wind blows. And you have no idea how much the wind blows here in Indiana when you have an open cornfield and a highway behind your property..LOL

i'd love to sell the plants or flowers i get from in my gh we're getting, but i don't wanna be rich, i'm happy where i am, if that makes sense. as long as my kids are fed, bills are paid and hubby is happy i'm happy, but i'd eventually love to add onto our home now or move to another place in the country. but not be rich. :'))
