I think one of the best retail nurseries on the island is Martin Viette, located on 25A (Northern Boulevard), East Norwich, NY 11732 Ph:(516)922-5530. Very nice diplays; wide selection; lots of courteous help.

The Downdide - They are pricey. And don't go on the weekends to accomplish heavy shopping if you are "allergic" to children or if it is nice weather - the place is a madhouse. I find Tuesdays/Wednesdays very calm and stocks are replenished.

The very large wholesale growers are out east in Suffolk county on the island. There is one west of you through Huntington Station on County Road 11. Head toward Cold Spring Harbor Station. It is on the left just west of Route 92. Sorry I can't remember the name. They are strictly wholesale.

There also more growers out in Riverhead and on the north fork of the island. I have only ventured out there once, so I can't offer specifics. There are several other growers out in the Hamptons and toward Montauk. Everything is off Hwy. 27 (Sunrise Highway). If you leave now - You should be back by Fall:-) Seriously, traffic is horrific! Pick your time to explore VERY carefully. It can take up to 2 1/2 hours just to get through the Hamptons as late spring and summer approach.
