Need professional help

How does one go about finding a professional landscape architect that specializes in residential design-build? I'd like to redo my softscape and put in some hardscape around my home so I need someone who can come up with a design that works and implement it in stages. Is there some kind of register or specialist listing or web page reference available? I know advertising is not allowed here so I'm not asking for a name, just to be pointed in the right direction. Thanks!

You might start with telephone directories, both in print and on-line. Maybe you'll spot someone right off that turns out to be what you are looking for. Otherwise, you would have to know someone who got the same kind of work done who could tell you who did it. Of course, that was your idea in coming here - but in case that doesn't produce the desired result...

Something like "landscape architects dallas" or vice versa might also bring up an internet source you can use. There is also the option of identifying and hiring a local landscape designer you could use. Seeing a completed project you liked nearby and finding out who did it could be helpful to you, maybe look around in some new neighborhoods or other places where you might come across one.

    I agree with bboy.

You will find that there are greater numbers of very good landscape designers, who are not landscape architects, that do what you are looking for. Landscape Architects have more liability due to their professional license reponsibilities than other designers. This often means that they are going to put more detail into the project to cover their tails than you may need which will often price them out of this type of job. You might find that many seem like they don't want to bother with you because they assume that you will not agree to their terms. They don't want to go through the process of writing up a proposal (which takes time away from other work) knowing it is likely going to be rejected due to cost.

Okay, looking around and seeing something I like and asking who did it sounds like something I could do.

I appreciate the difference between an architect and designer and have the same worry too, but I was not aware that a designer would have all the knowledge required to do all that I need. It seems like a lot to coordinate to me, but maybe experience could overcome that. I'll try that too, thanks.

www.apld.org is a good starting place. TX may have a trade organization for LDs as well. Just remember that there is no legal definition of a landscape designer- someone who calls themselves a landscape designer may have all the skills you need, or may be the stereotype we all fight- the crazy "artiste" who waves his or her arms around and hasn't a darn clue. As with any building trade, look at the portfolio, get references, see some built work in person- and always ask "have YOU done this type of project before?"

But, yeah- a good LD should be able to take on your project and knock your socks off.

I'll second contacting the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD). This is as close to a professional certification program for landscape designers as one is likely to find, it has an extensive national membership with local chapters dotted around the country and the membership is uniformly skilled and of high quality.

Here is a link that might be useful: APLD - Southwestern Chapter

If you have any home and garden shows in your area, go to them and check out the displays to see someone whose style you like. Usually these shows are at your local convention center or fairgrounds. There will be company reps there to talk to as well.

Thanks for all the good advice. I got a name from a friend who is a LA for a good design build firm here and their web page looks really good for me. I'm setting up an appointment. Wish me luck!
