When ever I grow hostas in 4 1/2" x 5" pots I get some small brown spots on the margins and the tip of the leaf. Not alot just enough to make them look , well not perfect. I thought it would be from uneven water but thats not the case. The new growth is fine its the older leaves. Any thoughts?? Thanks Bill

Were they exposed to frost? That can do it.

I wish I could say I was absolutely positive that they were not exposed to frost . It was such a screwy spring with the temps, I had to cover a number of times. I guess I will just have to watch the new growth carefully , as of now the new growth looks good. Thanks for the heads up ----Bill

Same here. We covered, but the blankets blew off and several were frost exposed. The damage did not show till much later. There are also viruses and nematodes, though I don't know the symptoms of the latter. The hosta library has a good section on diseases at the following address: http://www.hostalibrary.org/diseases/diseases.html |

I have that problem with Hosta Venus. I'm pouring the water to it. Maybe they want to be drier. I hope it's not bacterial.
