 o
small bush trunk protection/wrapping

I have a beautiful round, tall, and top heavy nikishi willow shrub. Wind is funneled to it because of small yards and adjacent houses so I've had to tie it down from two directions. This has worked very well, but I'm concerned about the rope which is breaking the fresh bark. I found a kit at garden store to run the rope through little sections of garden hose that would protect the trunk. This kit would work, but is it also possible for me to just wrap the trunk in something? What would be the appropriate wrap?

Rope or wire through hose is not a good way to stake or anchor a tree or shrub. A wide strap is the best solution. It can be mesh, fabric, rubber, etc., but it just needs to be wide. Wrapping the trunk is not a good idea, unless you intend to do it for a very short period of time.

Be sure to give your plant some room to sway a bit in the breeze. It needs to do so in order to bruild up a strong trunk and root system.
