Crazy Clematis

I have a client with an extremely overgrown clematis (probably Montana). It has approx. 10 main stalks and is growing up the carport to the roof and all along the walls stretching the entire width. At this point it is such a tangled mess I don't even know where to begin.

I know it's not the right time of year to tackle this but my client insists that she can't handle it anymore. Would it totally be a bad idea to thin it a bit right now? And when I do tackle it... What is the best way to tackle it? From the base? Do I attempt to untangle it? It's close to 10 metres in places. Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.
