Canary Island Date Palms - where to buy?

| I need to buy two Canary Island Date Palms, or something that looks similar, about 5 to 6' tall. I'm near Baltimore. Can anyone point me to a source?
Also looking for some large 5 to 6' papyrus plants.
Thanks for any help. |

| I'm sure you realize that these are not winter hardy in Maryland, and would be so large that they are difficult to bring inside for the winter? Would you consider a dwarf Pygmy Date Palm as a substitute. At least here in California, you can get specimens with 3 to 4 feet of clear trunk and overall height of 6 yo 7 feet if you are willing to spend some money. These would certainly be availabe in your area as indoor plants shipped up from Florida, and make a much better indoor/outdoor palm than a true Phoenix canariensis. If you have your heart set on the P. canariensis, I would imagine your closest source would also be down south in Florida or Texas. This palm is nearly a weed here in California, and reseeds readily where they are growing. Specimens 20 feet or more in height are very popular for new boulevard plantings where an instant statement is required, as they transplant easily with almost next to no root ball given the size of the palms. Also, you do know that the base of all Phoenix fronds have viscious thorns that can poke an eye out if not careful? Not palms to locate in tight spaces where people will have to brush against them. |

| Yes, I know they are not winter-hardy. I was trying to find these for a client who is throwing an Egyptian-themed party and wanted to rent them. After I discovered they are thorny and expensive, I think she'll settle for a more generic kind of palm. Thanks for your help. |
