Concrete Planters - where to find

Posted by CarrieB 7 Philadelphia (My Page) on

Hi all,

I have a new client who wants his small (8'x12'), concrete city yard turned into a garden. He wants four rectangular "architectural (not sure what that means) concrete" planters to go around the perimiter of the yard, leaving only space to get out the back door.

I plan to call the PA Hort. Society to see if they know vendors who make/sell these items. They will probably need to be custom cast to fit the garden perfectly, unless I can talk him in to using several smaller square/rectangular planters to fill the perimeter of the yard.

Other than calling PHS, what suggestions do you have for finding these planters, or a craftperson who makes them?

Thanks,

CarrieB

I can't really help with any sources, but what I think that he means by "architectural" is that they are bold and provide lots of structure (and interest) to the garden. Rather than just being utilitarian, they take on a strong aesthetic role in the landscape.

Try doing a search under "concrete aggregate planters" or "precast concrete planters" - you'll turn up dozens of companies that manufacture these in a variety of styles. You will obviously want to choose one close to home - these are very heavy items and shipping any distance would be horrendous. I have a very small one that weighs a ton and requires a handtruck for me to move. Also, custom ones are possible but will add significantly to cost. Hope your client has deep pockets - they're not inexpensive to begin with.

You couldn't talk him into something a little less institutional and a bit more mobile?

Carrie, I have a list of local suppliers and a couple of local manufacturers. You can try Haddonstone in Belmawr, NJ 856-931-7011 http://www.haddonstone.com/ and Masserellis, Hammonton, NJ 609-567-9700 http://www.massarelli.com/. They are both manufacturers of cast stone, concrete products. I have both of their catalogs if you need to check out specefics. There is also Al's Garden Art and Henri products, which I have those catalogs also. You have to find their products at local retailers that aren't as willing to deal on pricing and ordering due to minimums and shipping. Let me know if I can be of help.

Hello CarrieB,
The best concrete planters on the market are right in your back yard...Campania, they are out of Quakertowne, I have bought many, many items from them, They are wholesale only but I am sure Waterloo Gardens stock them as well as other garden centers in your area. Beautiful selection, quality urns, planters. Campania.com. Your client will have a hard time making a selection with all the choices they have to offer,

One of my favorites is Classic Garden Ornament's cast limestone planters. Does your client have $$?

It's the end of the season. Check out your local upscale garden centers and see if you can find something you like. Speak to the owner/manager who will likely offer you a professional discount. You then charge the client accordingly. One of the garden centers near me that I buy from in a pinch has a 60% off sale right now on concrete. I agree w/Gardener about Campania. Great selection and quality.

We got our planters from a great place in Boerne, Texas called Riverbed Concrete. The basins are high end, contemporary and absolutely gorgeous!! We put some recycled glass in 2 of them and have fire bowls out by the pool. Love it!!
