Wheel Chair Garden

A friend has asked me to design a garden at a Nursing Home- Access to the garden whould include a walkway to a 12 x 24 patio/pergola. I need to consider that this garden will be used by the residents and some will be in wheel chairs.
Was considering using payers on the walk and patios but am open for other ideas. There is a slight slope to and from the garden - I will post pictures later.
Is there a standard width for the walkways. Many of the walks through the complex seem a narrow - maybe just wide enough for a wheelchair. Also most of the walks are macadam.

RE: Wheel Chair Garden

There is a GREAT deal of information on the Internet regarding accessible garden construction and hort. therapy. Here's a great article by Diane Relf. You should look up anything that she might write on the subject.

Here is a link that might be useful: Accessible gardening

The Chicago Botanic Garden also has a very nice 'accessible' garden inculding hanging baskets on pullys and vertical plantings to increase accessiblity. It has been a couple of years since I was there, but it sticks in my mind that it was very well done and very well thought out.
