 o
professional horticulturist certification

Hi folks --

I have recently joined the state and local nursery associations, and discovered that there is a state professional horticulturist certification available. It involves studying some information in a manual and taking a test that is offered yearly.

I am wondering if any of you have this certification, and if you have considered it useful from a business standpoint. My workers have enjoyed obtaining knowledge through courses and training, and I am considering having us all sit for this certification.

Thanks,
Linda

Linda, suggest you check out a similar thread that surfaced earlier this month ("Is anyone a CPH?"). The consensus was that any formalized educational program - even the self-study CPH testing process - was of benefit. The more you know, the better you can do the job and serve the customers. However, public recognition of this certification is pretty much non-existant. There may very well be some peer group benefits, but I'd do it just for the personal satisfaction of having an additional professional ranking to add to my resume.

Some local nurseries/garden centers are mentioning certified horticulturalist employees in their ads. Perhaps to differentiate from the discount/box stores?
