Exotic plant hunting, the impossible dream?

I was looking at eBay recently and found that one seller was offering interesting plants from Mexico that had recently been collected in the wild, apparently. The seller could not provide the species names, but as I recall they were all xeric caudiciforms, which seem to be in vogue these days.

Since I live not far from Mexico and love plants, especially the desert kind, it got me to wondering: how does one go about traveling around the Western Hemisphere looking for desirable plants, cuttings and seeds? Is it even practical to do this? I'm not just talking about Mexico but all the desert Southwest. Also of course, doing it legally and ethically.

Does anyone know how I can get info about how it is done and find out if it's a profession worth pursuing? I just got laid off from the non-horticultural industry I've been working in for 20 years and I'd like to try something different for a while.
