Much smalller trees are a smarter way to go. They will establish into their new soil system much faster and will begin to add substantial girth and terminal growth while the larger trees are still spinning their wheels.

It's a fact that smaller trees can even outgrow larger trees planted at the same time and do so in a short period of time. Something else to consider is that while those bigger trees are sitting in the ground, trying like crazy to grow a new root system (job #1), they have few energy reserves available to resist or recover from insect or disease problems, freeze damage, heat stress, etc.

They can't do everything at once, and will devote their energy resources and reserves to making roots.
