Transferring a newly rooted plant from water to soil...

For years I have been rooting cuttings in water then transferring to 50/50 ratio of perlite and regular potting soil and have lost maybe 30-40% of the plants from the switch over to soil. I know the root structure is more fragile when started in water but with 3 children and a menagerie of animals; a glass of water over the kitchen sink is the safest place. IÂve tried rooting in perlite and water but I like to change the water often and it just got goopy and half of the perlite went down the drain. HereÂs my question: Does anyone have a better method of transplanting from water to soil? Should I use a different soil mix? Just curious if someone has a tried and true method-

Thanks, Laura
