stock plants for scions/cuttings

Just morbid curiosity. I presume commercial propagators keep "stock" plants of various woody plant cultivars of various species that they use for scion or cutting material.

How are these plants maintained? Since, for many plants, upright growing shoots make better leaders than laterals (which often keep trying to grow like a "branch" for some time after grafting/rooting), are they treated almost like a pollard or coppice, or otherwise pruned in such a way as to encourage maximum upright growth?
