Rooting a live coast redwood burl

While on vacation in Northern California, I bought a live Coast Redwood (Sequoia Sempervirens) burl. It is a chunk of wood and bark with bulbous nodules on it. The directions said to place in 0.5 inches of water and under a light in order for it to grow. You can see green shoots starting to pop up all over it. How do I get the burl itself to grow roots so that I can plant it?

I live in northern California and have native redwoods on the property. I have never seen the sliced burls for sale. I would expect the roots to grow. Instead of the water in a plate, I think I would try a bed of soiless mix, kept damp to allow some air for the roots to grow into. Redwood burls are remarkable, good luck with yours. Al
