It is not necessary to cover hardwood cuttings in the winter.
I have taken close to 1000 cuttings, stuck about 25-30 in one gal. pots and buried the pots in my raised beds for the winter. They will do fine.
Last year I did that with about 500 grape vine cuttings and about 98% rooted.

Thanks! At the moment I've stuck some softwood cuttings in the bed, it is summer here, but they are in shade - will this work out?

The purpose of a mist system is to maintain close to 100% humidity around your cuttings, can you do this without having the area contained? Al

Yes this is possible if you have an intermittent mist timer. For example I can set my timer to start at 8 AM, mist for 5 seconds and turn back on every 10 minutes, then turn off at about 5 PM.

I have 2 such timers. One is battery operated and one is a plug in.

We are in Australia and we have mountains climate. That means a lot of change. One day is cool and misty the other hot. I have got a timer however I set it at once an hour for 20 seconds, but maybe more frequent shorter is better.
The other disadvantage of the cover is that you have to remove it every time you want to work there.
But it is true with the humidity and as well as the wind takes a lot of the mist away.
I did some ornamentals, rosemary and other herbs, cistus, fejoa ....more easy plants I reckon.
What is the easiest cover to build? Without a table saw and a lot of construction....

Sorry to say that the timer you have may not be appropriate for propagating plants. The norm is to mist for 5 sec. every 10 min. from about an hr. or so after the sun comes up to about an hr or so before the sun sets. I have 2 such timers. One works on batteries and the other one works in house voltage.
