winter cuttings of spring-flowering trees

Has anyone had success rooting dormant cuttings of deciduous flowering trees in wintertime?

My propagation books tell me to take cuttings of a "non-flowering shoot" so that the cutting can concentrate its energy on roots instead of flowers. I just took some cuttings of deciduous flowering trees while they're dormant, but some of these species put out flowers before leaves in spring.

I intend to try again with softwood cuttings of the same plants in spring and summer after they're done flowering, but I coulda sworn I'd read that winter twigs were easy to root, at least for some of these trees.
