newbie question

I'm babysitting a large house plant for my MIL for a year. I don't even know what kind it is. One part got a little leggy, so I cut it and put it in moist soil in hopes of it rooting. It has been a month. The leaves of the cutting are still green and perky. Does this mean that it is on its way to rooting? If it takes, when should I see roots?
