Propagating Cardoon from Roots

It is late Feb, SoCal, and I'm wondering if anyone can give me a tip on dividing my Cardoon. I have heard they grow back from a little root with a bud attached. Is that right? My plants have grown out quite a bit. Should I remove some of the large leaves before transplanting the separated plants? This is an aggressive weed in some places in the county and likes water, or so I read. Doesn't seem to be aggressive for me, being in the fog zone....

The only experience I have of propagating cardoons simply involves dividing them like any other perennial. Separate a portion with roots and it will grow.

Thank you, I've given that a try though it only had a few roots. I've cut back most of the big leaves. We'll see how it goes.

99% of the time it will take, even with the smallest 'hint' of root at the end of the stem. A very hardy plant especially when established. Care needed during 1st sprout / blossom, from frost.
