How do you root pineapples w/o fungus

Hello everyone!
I tried to root pineapple tops from the grocery store earlier this year. We did what we read online that we were supposed to do and put them in jars of water. However, they got that fungus stuff on them and I had to get them out. Would it work better if i dust them with Rootone and stick them in a pot of soil?

Thanks for your tips!!

Rootone is good, fungicide powder is also good, sticking in soil will eliminate most of the problem. keep soil damp not wet

After you have exposed the root nodules on the lower half inch of the base, just put the pineapple crown in cactus soil in a 6" terracotta pot.
